Burnt District Press is a unique publishing company. The majority of books published by Burnt District Press are primary source history books with a major focus on the Tran-Mississippi Theater and the Missouri/Kansas Border War. However, we do publish other works such as historical fiction, Genealogy/Family History, children’s books, novels, etc. We meet nearly every author face to face for a consultation and work on a one on one basis with the author.
We do not have a brick and mortar storefront because Burnt District Press is often “on the road” selling books at Civil War Reenactments, Living History Festivals and Book Fairs throughout Missouri and beyond. We dress in era clothing and our “store” is a large canvas sutler’s tent. Many of our authors market their own books. We do, however, list their books on our website and depending on the profit margin; we may list titles with Amazon.com and other major book sellers.
You may be assured that your book will be of the highest quality whether it is completely processed in-house or partially outsourced. Specialized digital printers capable of adapting to color graphic specifications are required for color work, such as multi color book covers or color photo’s; we outsource those jobs to another competent business.
We can, of course, handle orders of hundreds of books per order but the author is not required to order a large number of books all at once. We do prefer to print at least 25 copies on the first run. Whenever more books are needed the author may either drop us an email or telephone us and place an order for the number needed. We are a small business and orders are processed as they come in. We do not keep a large inventory on hand. It is wise to allow ten days to two weeks turn-around time for re-orders, depending on how busy we are at the time.
For best results, all graphics should be done by a graphic designer. If you wish, we can recommend someone who will take your ideas and design a cover for you. We can do light editing but it is the responsibility of the author to submit an edited version of his work. Should you, the author, need to hire a professional editor, for such things as grammar, punctuation and spelling, we can recommend someone. Since nonfiction historical works are enhanced by including an index, we can provide an indexing service for a fee. In each of these cases, you will be working directly with the individual hired to perform that particular task and you pay them.
We offer a variety of industry standard sizes and several styles of binding for your book. From our best quality case bound to the most economical plastic comb, we will create a cover that is right for your work.
Your manuscript should be submitted to us in digital format, as a Word document saved to a C.D. or flashdrive and mailed to our company address.
