This is a history of a small town in Cass County, Missouri and the families that once lived there and are now residents of that area. The town came into existence prior to the American Civil War. Included are segments from two diaries of Union soldiers who served in units on the Missouri-Kansas border and also in the Eastern Theater. Step back to a boy’s simple life in Missouri and to a little girl’s terrorizing childhood in England during World War II. Much has been written about the devastation caused by the American Civil War to our homeland but the process that mended the land has been overlooked. This charred and bloodstained land along the border at this little town of Austin began the process of healing through a simple bowl of beans.
